What happens when the best engineering minds meet the chaotic, highly complex reality of India’s rural landscape? Ever wondered? For decades, India’s agriculture sector that feeds more than 1.4 billion people and forms the backbone of the nation’s economy has depended on gut feeling, grit and disparate systems. A farmer in Andhra Pradesh may be waiting for rain, ignorant of soil moisture, impending pest attacks or if government fertilizer stocks will reach his local hub in time.
Meanwhile, huge amounts of data – weather forecasts, soil health cards, land registry records, scheme databases are living in total isolation from each other in state departments. The difference between what advanced technology could do and what really got into the hands of the person working the land was huge.
That was until Vassar Labs decided to shut it down:
Nikhilesh Kumar and Laxmiprasad Putta founded Vassar Labs in 2014 not as yet another agritech startup trying to sell an app to farmers. Instead, it became a pioneer in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) – creating the deep-tech intelligence systems that underpin entire states, countries, river basins and cities.
The Genesis: A Secret Found in Water
To understand the mission of Vassar Labs in agriculture, you first have to start where its journey began: Water management!
The venture was co-founded by Nikhilesh Kumar, who came with a rich hands-on engineering background as the CEO. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur (B.Tech Hons in Instrumentation Engineering) and the early career in heavy industrial operations at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. He’s covered everything from overseeing a greenfield hydrogen generation plant at Sterlite Technologies, to leading engineering, safety and site execution at Johnson Matthey, to leading regional business development across the MENA region at Sepam. He’s experienced the inner workings of complex operational systems and their points of failure.
That experience on the ground was a fundamental truth: Technology is useless if it doesn’t reach the people who manage the systems day to day.
In its initial phase, Vassar Labs concentrated on creating AI-driven decision support systems for water management. The team partnered with government agencies to enhance water resources in multiple regions. But as they delved into hydrology and water security, one stark realization became impossible to ignore:

But the farmers deciding what to do with that water were flying almost blind. Groundwater levels were declining, climate variability rising and farmers were struggling with unpredictable weather, inefficient inputs and uncertain crop yields.
The problem was not, basically, lack of data. Governments had mountains of information already – satellite imagery, weather analytics, soil cards and scheme records. The trouble was disconnected intelligence. The systems were never came together to form actionable insights at the individual field level.
Rather than building another mobile app, build the Digital Public Infrastructure for Agriculture. Vassar Labs took a radically different approach.
Building fieldWISE: The Common Source of Truth
Just like national digital rails transformed payments, and Vassar Labs built fieldWISE, the single Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for agriculture, for identity verification across India.
fieldWISE brings together satellite intelligence, AI, GIS mapping, weather analytics and government databases into a single, highly interoperable ecosystem, instead of leaving governments or farmers to wrestle with fragmented tools. They make a digitally verified twin of every farm, showing the exact boundary, the types of crops, the soil profile, the water access and the local micro-climate. FieldWISE is not a replacement to existing government systems, but works in tandem with national platforms such as AgriStack, PM-KISAN and state Digital Crop Surveys. It includes the whole agricultural cycle:

Today, fieldWISE is an operational framework that facilitates large-scale, sovereign digital agriculture across millions of hectares in India.
1. Andhra Pradesh (APAIMS 2.0)
APAIMS 2.0 has streamlined agriculture operations across the state with 20 lakh (2 million) registered farmers and over 10,000 agriculture officers.
One of the system’s most important innovations is the Digital Fertilizer Distribution Module. “In the past, distribution of fertilizers saw leakages and bottlenecks. 66.5 lakh verified farmers and 2.25 crore land records introduced in the verified transaction pipeline through APAIMS 2.0.
The system digitally allocated more than 40.6 lakh fertilizer bags (1.52 lakh metric tonnes of Urea and 31,095 MT of DAP) to nearly 10 lakh farmers – ensuring right input reaches the right farmer in a transparent manner.
2.Kerala (KATHIR)
In Kerala, fieldWISE is powering KATHIR and supporting over 16 lakh farmers across 17 lakh geotagged hectares. The platform offers micro-targeted agro-advisories for over 185 crops and uses AI satellite vision to detect more than 3.77 crore coconut and palm trees across the state.
3. Maharashtra (MahaAgriNEX)
MahaAgriNEX is powered by fieldWISE under the state’s MahaAgri-AI Policy and is creating Maharashtra’s sovereign digital agriculture engine for data-led governance and farmer advisory services.
When Precision Saves Lives and Livelihoods:
The true measure of deep-tech infrastructure is during extreme events.
Vassar Labs’ platform was instrumental in emergency preparedness when Cyclone Montha hit Andhra Pradesh. The system, employing advanced predictive analytics, mapped the exact path of the cyclone over agricultural land, identifying 6.23 lakh vulnerables farm lands.
Having Real – time field data, state authorities send their field officers to vulnerables zones and 69 lakh emergency alert SMSes directly to the farmers in the path of storm which helps in safeguarding the livelihoods.
