Indian soil had gone “biologically blind,” Dr. Gadge realized, in a country where millions of farmers still dump expensive chemical fertilizers into fields as crop yields plateau. He quit government security to form Biome Technologies Pvt Ltd, inspired by a mission to connect top level laboratory research and last mile farmer.
His flagship innovation, Soilometer is now enabling direct access to soil health diagnostics to farmers in less than 3 hours, translating complex biotechnology into a field-ready tool that is revolutionizing rural lives in India.

Born in Rural Maharashtra: Seeing the Gap First Hand
Dr. Prafull Gadge’s connection with Indian agriculture is not academic, it is personal. He grew up in the Maharashtra countryside and saw potential, and the daily heartbreaks of farm families, from an early age.
His love for science led him to pursue higher studies in Biochemistry and eventually to his Ph.D. in Proteomics of Plant-Pest Interaction. His career then took a prestigious turn, with research positions in government institutes and an academic appointment as professor. He had made it by the standards of the time.
But whenever he walked out of the laboratory and into a farmer’s field, a nagging question pursued him.
“Why was so much agricultural science being generated inside research labs, but so little of it ever reaching the farmer in a form they could actually use?” Dr. Prafull Gadge remembers.
It bothered him. He went through villages and saw the same thing, again and again. Input costs were soaring, soil health was deteriorating in silence and farmers were making high-stakes decisions without any information.
Moving Beyond the Lab: “If Science Doesn’t Get to the Field, It Doesn’t Matter”
The problem was not a lack of digital agri-tech. Satellite imagery, weather prediction apps and electronic sensors were ubiquitous. But Dr. Gadge saw a huge scientific gap in the way agriculture was measuring soil health.
Traditional soil testing was almost entirely chemical in nature (levels of NPK). Meanwhile, the living microbial ecosystem underground, the very engine of natural soil fertility, remained hidden from view. High-tech solutions estimated crop health from space, but none measured the living biology inside the dirt.
The scientific consensus was clear: Soil biological health testing required expensive equipment, specialized lab technicians, high costs (nigh ₹10,000 per test) and a week-long wait time.
Dr Gadge would not accept that lab-grade science could not be brought to the farm gate. “I did not leave a secure government and academic career to build a company. “I left it to build solutions for farmers. “The real value of the science is when it solves the problems of the real world,” says Dr. Gadge.
He sacrificed tenure and regular paychecks to develop a diagnostic device that would execute scientifically validated biological and chemical reactions right on the field.
