Hortimax FPC: Built a ₹3.5 Crore Integrated Onion Value Chain Business by Empowering 406 Farmers

Hortimax Farmer Producer Company (FPC) is a farmer owned company formed by progressive local farmers in drought prone region of North Solapur, Maharashtra. Hortimax FPC is primarily active within a 25 km radius (expanding to 50 km), serving vegetable growers and heavily engaged in developing an integrated onion value chain to change rural livelihoods.

With the collective efforts of the farmers and immense support from MANAVLOK, NGO and Thermax Foundation and the CSR Donor, the FPC Hortimax is established. The proper guidance, capacity building and financial assistance played an important role in strengthening and forming the FPC. Without their constant support, the FPC would not be possible.

Confronting Ongoing Agricultural Problems

North Solapur is characterized by severe climatic conditions, lack of water and frequent droughts, making agriculture a risky proposition. While the main income generating activity for local families is onion farming, individual growers have been suffering for years from severe structural bottlenecks:

  1. Market Volatility: Frequent price crashes at peak harvest seasons.
  2. Increasing Operation costs: The price of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and labor is rising day by day
  3. Post-Harvest Losses: Total absence of grading, scientific storage and processing infrastructure.
  4. Exploitation of the supply chains: Due to heavily dependent on the middle men, cause the poor bargaining power and farmers gets less amount as compared to fair value.

The Local farmers understood that individual actions are not enough and came together to form a powerful company, Hortimax FPC, which transforms the regional agricultural crisis into a profound, sustainable business opportunity.

Creating an Integrated Farmer-Owned Solution:

Hortimax FPC was born with a clear mission of reducing cultivation costs, maximizing farmer realizations and creating direct market linkages. Today the organization supports 406 shareholder farmers through an end-to-end support model.

1. Agronomy and Input Distribution: Hortimax has also made Farmer Facility Centre to provide high quality agricultural inputs and scientific advisory services to the farmers.

Through agricultural guidance the organized members have reduced their production cost of upto 20-30%

    2. Mechanization and Saving cost: During planting harvesting, to fight acute labour shortages, the Hortimax has introduced scientific and modern machinery like:

    •  Machines for Onion transplanter
    • Grades machines and Onion Sorters
    • Custom hiring centres and Farm Equipment

Mechanization helps to reduced the labour costs, operational time and helps in uniformity in crop quality

    3. Value Addition and Solar drying:

To avoid distress of sales of lower grade onions post-harvest Hortimax has initiated the Solar drying initiative as well. It converts the low grades onion produce to high grades value-added products.

It increases shelf life, creates employment in rural areas and opens up secondary avenues of income.

    4. Market Access & Export Linkages

Hortimax central aggregation, sorting and grading of produce removed the dependency on intermediaries.

The company sold over 1,800 tonnes during FY 2025-26. between local APMC markets, retail buyers and modern trade outlets, thus guaranteeing 10-15% higher prices for member farmers. Significantly, the FPC built direct exports sending premium $75 mm+ onions directly to the Gulf countries.
