AWL Agri Business Ltd (earlier known as Adani Wilmar Ltd), one of India’s top agri-business and FMCG companies, has taken a big step toward transforming the mustard farming ecosystem. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) and the Solidaridad Regional Expertise Centre (SREC) to jointly lead the Regenerative Mustard Mission – Sustainable Mustard Farm Project.
This partnership is designed to bring large-scale innovation to mustard cultivation and help farmers adopt practices that improve productivity, income, and long-term soil health. The project will run until August 2027 and focuses on sustainable, tech-enabled solutions for farmers.
Key Highlights of the Initiative:
Expansion of Model Farms:
- AWL will double its mustard model farms from 1,500 to 3,000, covering nine districts in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.
- These farms will become live demonstration sites for modern farming techniques.
Technology & Climate Solutions:
- Introduction of satellite-based crop monitoring for better yield predictions.
- Soil health management programs to improve fertility and reduce chemical dependency.
- Climate-resilient practices to make mustard cultivation more resistant to weather fluctuations.
Farmer Training & Development:
About 20,000 farmers will be trained through:
- Demonstration plots
- Farmer field schools
- Digital advisory tools
Training will focus on boosting yields, optimizing costs, and adopting sustainable practices.
Boost to Farmer Income:
The mission targets a 30% increase in farmer income by closing yield gaps and reducing input costs.
Alignment with National Goals:
The project supports India’s National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-OS).
It contributes to Atmanirbhar Bharat by reducing dependency on imported edible oils.
Why This Partnership Matters:
This initiative is more than just a corporate CSR project, it’s a strategic move to transform India’s oilseed sector. Mustard is a key oilseed crop, but its productivity has historically been low. By bringing together AWL’s market reach, SEA’s industry network, and SREC’s expertise in sustainable farming, the project promises to:
- Create a scalable model that can be replicated across other states.
- Encourage eco-friendly farming practices that protect biodiversity and conserve resources.
- Build consumer trust by promoting ethically sourced and sustainable mustard oil.
About AWL Agri Business Ltd:
AWL is a market leader known for its flagship “Fortune” brand of edible oils and staples. With 24 manufacturing plants across India, it serves retail customers, HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants, Catering), and institutional buyers. Over the years, AWL has diversified into foods, essentials, and even home & personal care products making it a trusted name in the FMCG sector.
This partnership cements AWL’s role as a pioneer in responsible agriculture, bridging the gap between farmers, technology, and sustainability. If successful, the model could set a new benchmark for oilseed production and help India move closer to self-reliance in edible oils.
